Communications Strategy for Flexible Working in the NSW Government

NSW Public Service Commission

The NSW Government sought a campaign to increase awareness and understanding of flexible working principles and practices across the whole of the government sector, aiming to make all roles flexible by 2019 (pre-pandemic). The strategy was to promote a shared responsibility approach, focusing on individual needs and customer outcomes.

Through extensive consultation with the diverse government workforce, a brand was developed to aid understanding of flexible working, emphasising the diverse roles, age, gender, ethnicity, and locations within the sector. The campaign material showcased different people in various roles working flexibly, providing examples beyond the conventional perceptions of flexible working.

Key messages were designed to encourage participation, explaining the different options for working flexibly, and demonstrating the benefits and outcomes for individuals, teams, and customers. The campaign's simplicity allowed it to cater to the diverse audience settings while effectively supporting specific mindsets.

By shifting perceptions, the campaign fostered a culture that embraced the best outcomes for everyone involved, promoting local innovation and problem-solving while maintaining or improving service delivery for the people of NSW.
